3 situations that require an increased safe following distance

When driving, you need to maintain a safe following distance. You should use the three-second rule to ensure you have enough space and time to react to changes in the flow of traffic. Thus, if the vehicle ahead passes a stationary object like a signpost or tree, it should take you three seconds to reach that object. You can calculate the seconds by counting, “one-thousand, two-thousand, three-thousand.”  However, in some instances, you may need to count beyond three thousand. Here is when you need to increase the safe following distance: 1. In adverse weather conditions Bad weather conditions, such as heavy rains, snow or ice, make the road slippery, which, in turn, reduces traction between the tires and the road surface. The reduced traction can substantially increase a vehicle’s stopping distance. That’s why it’s crucial to add one or two seconds to the three-second rule when driving in adverse weather conditions. 2. When your visibility is reduced Your visibility when driving is usually reduced at night and in harsh environmental conditions like fog, snow and thick mist. In such instances, your reaction may be slower because of the low light conditions. It may take time to notice a situation that requires you to react quickly. Nonetheless, with increased space and time, you can respond safely. 3. Following a large vehicle When following a large vehicle, such as a truck or bus, you should increase the safe following distance. Large vehicles have a blind spot directly behind them. A truck or bus driver may slow down or stop suddenly without knowing you are behind them.  Additionally, because of its size, a large vehicle can block your view. You need to be further behind to see what’s happening around you. You should maintain and increase the safe following distance when necessary. If another driver fails to do these, crashing into you, legal guidance can help you receive just compensation. The post 3 situations that require an increased safe following distance first appeared on Martinez & Schill LLP.
